Deeside’s Young Lifesaving Superstars win North Wales Cadet of the Year Competition

The St John Ambulance Cymru North Wales Cadet of the Year competition took place last month, showcasing some of our amazing young lifesavers.

This year’s competition was held in Wrexham and 15 Cadets from all over North Wales took part. The competition was made up of various tasks, including building a straw bridge as a team, acting out a first aid scenario and delivering a presentation on improving St John Ambulance Cymru’s youth programmes.

Darren Murray, Assistant Chief Volunteer at St John Ambulance Cymru, was a judge. Darren explained how winners were awarded based on various skills; team work, leadership, co-operation, communication, first aid, knowledge and presentation skills.

These skills are the foundations of the Cadet learning scheme. The programme teaches young people these skills throughout their professional and personal lives.

Darren commented on the competition;

“I enjoyed seeing how our Cadets worked with each other and how well they represented our organisation. They are so astute about what needs to change and what works well within St John Ambulance Cymru. Their ideas were fantastic.

If they are our future, St John Ambulance Cymru is in very safe hands”

14-year-old Izabelle from the Deeside Division was awarded Cadet of the Year, followed by Chloe, also from Deeside Division, who won Deputy Cadet of the Year.

Division leader Jill told us that Izabelle first joined the Cadets at the beginning of 2022 and regularly gives up her time to volunteer at events within the community. Jill commented;

“From the time we met her, the Youth Team could see that she was destined for greater things.  She has an air of confidence beyond her years.”

You can see she is passionate about helping others with the way she deals with the public and volunteers alike.”

Jill claimed that the whole of the Deeside Division are incredibly proud of Izabelle. She commented;

“As a Youth Team we are here to help our Cadets be the best they can be and to let them shine.

Our aim at Deeside is to give our Cadets a fantastic experience and to give them great opportunities to advance their skills.“

Izabelle explained why she joined the Cadets, she said: “because of my interest in medicine, the fact that I enjoy a challenge and the opportunities I’ve had to help people and gain valuable experiences.” Izabelle also mentioned “the sense of belonging I get from being part of the wonderful team at Deeside.” Izabelle is settling into her new role well and continues to work towards her Grand Prior Award.

The St John Ambulance Cadets is not only a programme which teaches a new generation of lifesavers vital first aid skills, but also includes lots of fun activities and projects that will help to build general leadership and communication skills.

Sêr Achub Bywyd Ifanc Glannau Dyfrdwy yn ennill Cystadleuaeth Cadet y Flwyddyn Gogledd Cymru

Cynhaliwyd cystadleuaeth Cadet y Flwyddyn Gogledd Cymru St John Ambulance Cymru fis diwethaf, gan arddangos rhai o’n hachubwyr bywyd ifanc anhygoel.

Cynhaliwyd y gystadleuaeth eleni yn Wrecsam a chymerodd 15 o Gadetiaid o bob rhan o Ogledd Cymru ran. Roedd y gystadleuaeth yn cynnwys tasgau amrywiol, gan gynnwys adeiladu pont wellt fel tîm, actio senario cymorth cyntaf a rhoi cyflwyniad ar wella rhaglenni ieuenctid St John Ambulance Cymru.

Roedd Darren Murray, Prif Wirfoddolwr Cynorthwyol St John Ambulance Cymru, yn farnwr. Eglurodd Darren sut y dyfarnwyd enillwyr ar sail sgiliau amrywiol; gwaith tîm, arweinyddiaeth, cydweithredu, cyfathrebu, cymorth cyntaf, gwybodaeth a sgiliau cyflwyno.

Y sgiliau hyn yw sylfaen y cynllun dysgu Cadetiaid. Mae'r rhaglen yn addysgu'r sgiliau hyn i bobl ifanc trwy gydol eu bywydau proffesiynol a phersonol.

Gwnaeth Darren sylw ar y gystadleuaeth;

“Fe wnes i fwynhau gweld sut roedd ein Cadetiaid yn gweithio gyda’i gilydd a pha mor dda roedden nhw’n cynrychioli ein sefydliad. Maent mor graff ynghylch yr hyn sydd angen ei newid a'r hyn sy'n gweithio'n dda o fewn St John Ambulance Cymru. Roedd eu syniadau yn wych.

Os mai nhw yw ein dyfodol, mae St John Ambulance Cymru mewn dwylo diogel iawn.”

Dyfarnwyd Cadet y Flwyddyn i Izabelle, 14 oed o Adran Glannau Dyfrdwy, ac yna Chloe, hefyd o Adran Glannau Dyfrdwy, a enillodd Ddirprwy Gadét y Flwyddyn.

Dywedodd arweinydd yr adran, Jill, wrthym fod Izabelle wedi ymuno â’r Cadetiaid am y tro cyntaf ar ddechrau 2022 a’i bod yn rhoi o’i hamser yn rheolaidd i wirfoddoli mewn digwyddiadau yn y gymuned. Dywedodd Jill;

“O’r amser y gwnaethon ni gwrdd â hi, roedd y Tîm Ieuenctid yn gallu gweld ei bod yn mynd i gael pethau mwy. Mae ganddi ymdeimlad o hyder y tu hwnt i’w blynyddoedd.”

“Gallwch chi weld ei bod hi'n angerddol am helpu eraill gyda'r ffordd y mae'n delio â'r cyhoedd a gwirfoddolwyr fel ei gilydd.”

Honnodd Jill fod holl Adran Glannau Dyfrdwy yn hynod falch o Izabelle. Dywedodd;

“Fel Tîm Ieuenctid rydym yma i helpu ein Cadetiaid i fod y gorau y gallant fod ac i adael iddynt ddisgleirio.

Ein nod yng Nglannau Dyfrdwy yw rhoi profiad gwych i’n Cadetiaid a rhoi cyfleoedd gwych iddynt ddatblygu eu sgiliau.”

Esboniodd Izabelle pam ymunodd â’r Cadetiaid, dywedodd: “oherwydd fy niddordeb mewn meddygaeth, y ffaith fy mod yn mwynhau her a’r cyfleoedd rydw i wedi’u cael i helpu pobl a chael profiadau gwerthfawr.”

Meddai Izabelle hefyd am “yr ymdeimlad o berthyn rwy’n ei gael o fod yn rhan o’r tîm gwych yng Nglannau Dyfrdwy.”

Mae Izabelle yn setlo yn ei rôl newydd yn dda ac yn parhau i weithio tuag at ei Gwobr Grand Prior.

Mae Cadetiaid St John Ambulance nid yn unig yn rhaglen sy'n dysgu sgiliau cymorth cyntaf hanfodol i genhedlaeth newydd o achubwyr bywyd, ond hefyd yn cynnwys llawer o weithgareddau a phrosiectau hwyliog a fydd yn helpu ddatblygu sgiliau arwain a chyfathrebu cyffredinol.
