Sharps Training

About our Sharps Training course

The dangers of drugs affect everybody. Used syringes and other drug-related waste are found in a variety of places, including commercial premises, schools, hospitals and pubs. Discarded sharps and other clinical waste can cause harm to those who come in contact with them. That's why it's important to have the awareness to ensure personal safety is not compromised by sharps litter.

Our 2 hour Sharps Training course is developed with PHS Waste Management and will teach you the correct procedure to dispose of this harmful litter safely. We’ll also train you to deal with drug-induced emergencies quickly and effectively.

When it comes to sharps training, we the leading provider in Wales. In the UK, St John Ambulance is one of the voluntary aid societies (VAS) who are recognised by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as standard setters for first aid training in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981. We don't require external accreditation through an Awarding Organisation.

When talking about medical waste, sharps refers to objects with sharp edges or points, such as a needle, syringe, lancet. We would also consider scalpel blades as sharps clinical waste.

Any and all medical waste is dangerous, and sharps are no exception. Incorrect handling and disposal of sharps waste can result not only in cuts and punctures, but also puts handlers at risk of bloodborne infections & diseases, as well as other potentially infectious materials. Understanding infection control and safe handling procedures will help to minimise risk from injury as much as possible.

While it is very important that all healthcare professionals are aware of the correct methods to handle and dispose of sharps, unfortunately sharps are often found in non-medical environments. This is often as a result of drug use and means that sharps may be found in places such as public parks, on the street, and even near schools. As the general public and even children will be at risk in these locations, its important for a wide range of people to be trained in how to dispose of sharps properly.
